At the last meeting of General Council in August 2009, there was a proposal concerning the status ot the Twenty Articles of Faith,contained in the Doctrine Section of the Manual.It proposes adding to the Doctrine Section of the Basis of Union, in addition to the Twenty Articles, three other United Church expressions of faith; the 1940 Statement of Faith, the New Creed and A Song of Faith. In order for such a change to take place a Remit must be sent to individual Presbyteries and the Session or Board of local congregations to vote either in favour or against the proposal being made in the Remit.
In order for the change to take place the remit must pass by majority in both Presbyteries and Sessions or Boards and then also at the next meeting of the General Council. Any failure to vote is considered a Negatice vote.
To help all local congregations and their boards and Presbyteries make an informed decision the General Council has created a study document to help the process.
